Maca is the root of Lepidium meyenii, a plant in the mustard family grown on high plateaus of the Peruvian Andes. The dried root is milled into powder. Buyers choose between color types (yellow, red, and black roots) and between raw and gelatinized processing.

Raw vs gelatinized
Raw maca powder is the dried root, milled. Gelatinized maca is processed with heat and pressure before milling, which gelatinizes the starch. Gelatinized powder has a milder, toastier taste and is the common choice for drink mixes, bars, and baked goods. Raw powder keeps the sharper, earthier root flavor.
Black maca
Maca roots come in several colors, and harvests are sorted by color. Black maca is the least common color, roughly 10 to 20 percent of a harvest, so it usually trades at a premium to yellow maca. Ask for the color type to be stated on the specification sheet.
What to check on the COA
Match the lot number and test date on the certificate to the lot you are quoted, then read the results against your own specification, not just the seller's. For maca, check microbiology (especially on raw powder, which is not cooked), moisture, heavy metals, and, for organic lots, the pesticide screen. For gelatinized powder, the specification sheet should say it is gelatinized. See how to read a certificate of analysis for the full walkthrough.
Organic certificates
Organic listings carry a certificate on file, and organic certificates are checked against the USDA Organic INTEGRITY database.
Buying notes
The minimum order is one unit, meaning one full pack. Every listing shows a live per-kilogram price at the highest volume tier, and quotes come back within one business day with the lot COA, the specification sheet, and freight options. Stock sits in US warehouses and is already cleared into the United States, so there is no import step on your side. Most listings offer a sample before you commit.
